Regarding 2017 and What Relaxes Me as a Writer

Hi, Readers!

How has 2017 been so far for me? Busy! But being busy is good. The key is to not get overwhelmed and just take it one task at a time. Easier said than done, haha, but all I can do is keep trying my best. 🙂

What I’ve been up to since my last blog was finishing NaNoWriMo 2016, the holidays, and now it’s the beginning of a new year where everything seems like it’s happening at once. So what helps me relax during crazy busy times? As a writer, depending on what I’m working on in a project, it can be relaxing or just add to my stress level. If it’s the first or second draft then I’m usually relaxed and having the greatest time telling the story and forming it in the beginning stages. But if it’s a draft or two later and I’m editing like a mad woman then that is nothing but stress for me. So let’s say it’s the latter we’re talking about, how do I relax? How do I push through? Well, honestly I push through even if I really don’t want to, and all I want to do is scream and cry (but I don’t, scream that is,) until I get the daily goal finished. Then after that hard push is when I take the time to relax by watching something that makes me laugh, a TV show on Netflix or Hulu that I already know I love and will take my thoughts off my worries. A quick 20-30 minute break and it does the trick.

I’ve also found reading to be relaxing in the past, but since I’ve started writing seriously and publishing I haven’t had the amount of time I’d like to read because I honestly can’t do both at the same time. It will ruin my writing voice or make my fantasy world fade away, and of course, I can’t have that happen! So when I’m writing those first drafts I don’t read other books, I can’t risk being pulled out of my own fantasy world and into theirs. Instead, I give myself reading breaks between projects. But because I’m a busy family person as well, this doesn’t mean I get a ton of free time during these breaks, but it means the little time I do have I get to read a few chapters every few days and finish a book or two from my TBR list before delving back into my own writing. This is the cycle of things.

I’m hoping to get my reading break in March, but in the meantime working on two beginning drafts of two projects that haven’t been revealed yet. I’m so excited about them! Can’t wait to tell you about them soon! In the meantime, try to relax a little during the busy goal setting time of new years resolutions, and writing goals if you’re a writer. Best of luck!

Thanks for reading and for your support as always, talk soon!

P.S. There’s a Goodreads giveaway for 5 signed ARCs of Oak & Mistletoe going until March 20th, so make sure to enter if you haven’t already and share it online 🙂
